Identity Clash of 2012: Little Bit of Awkward, lotta bit of RATCHET!! (pt.2)

*WARNING: NatDivine and Blogger cannot be held liable for any ratchetness you may incur whilst reading this post, watch the videos and clicking the links. You may want to hide yo wife, hide yo kids, yo finest lace front and yo ebt card before you read this post!*

Just as the internet, video-sharing sites and the Colored-Folk run blogs with content geared toward “black folk” catapulted the awkward black nerd identity, so has it spawned the sporadic f*%kery that is “Supa Ratchet”.“Ratchetness” itself is not a new phenomenon in the treasure trove of identities ascribed to black people over the few hundreds of years. However, the term "ratchet" has been recently labeled to the content.

The word is actually a southern colloquialism.  The word “ratchet” is the ebonic cousin to the English word for “wretched” (which stands for someone or something of low caliber, poor quality or unpleasant state). When written in its romanized form, it looks like “ratchet”, when spoken it is said with a southern twang.

Social media and video sharing sites have been the primary sling that has shot “ratchetness” to Sup Ratchet status and the forefront of what identity of blackness is supposed to be.  Mainstream media can also be named a culprit in the creation of le “Rachet” and one could point out stations like VH1 news stations, shows like “House Wives” shows, and MSNBC docs for maintaining the black stereotype of le “ratchet”. These shows and relics of old media  don't hold a thing to the impact new media and sites such as world star hip hop,  Media Takeout , twitter and the power of Youtube that not only accept the ratchetness, but celebrates the tom-foolery that occurs as a result of le ratchetness. (and profits exponential)

Old media outlets (news, television and cable networks) were able to contain and present ratchetness between items of serious news and entertainment segments of the day (except VH1 of course). Ratchetness was (is) spread to the masses but not to its fullest capacity. The mainstream media lacked continual visibility. To become a true all-encompassing structured identity ratchetness needed another faster, strong, dedicated avenue to mature. The miracle (or curse) of online media is that it’s a 24 hour content monster that can dedicate whole sections of the web to the nurturing and molding of a variety of different identities; hyper stimulation for the fiends of ratchet content. Hence why I call this identity “Supa Ratchet.”

From cursing kids, to anthems, to churches singing fast food jingles on the corner, to gangsters dancing in diapers, to this *ish, and much, much, more; ratchetness has come into its own. Ratchness can be identified, has its own language , music (See: Youtube ), styles, websites (See: world star hip hop) and epistemology (yolo).  As noted in one of the links I've presented, ratchetness is not only a "black thing" but can be enjoyed by members of all races. However, if you were to google ratchetness...mmmhmmm. (The ire of a community can be seen here).

Ratchetness if its own distinguishably unique identity; however, even with ratchet content being streamed at the online community at the speed of light it has not been able to quell the online communities hunger for come content.. From pure ratchetness to structured ratchness you can see throughout YouTube and other online mediums. From ratchet girls anthem, to faux-ratchet rap, to sketches, Supa Ratchet is born. Supa Ratchet is just a imitation of what ratchetness is supposed to be.

In my last identity clash post I was able to identify the King and Queen of the Awkward Black Nerd identity; however, for this identity I can't quite peg a queen and king because of the nature of ratchets. Ratchetness is an identity but it isn't a consistent one; it is capricious, fleeting and amorphous. Ratchetness is had within a moment and reveals itself at the most inopportune timing for the perpetrators of it.  The Sweet Browns and Antoine Dodsons weren’t out to be “ratchet”, unfortunate events occurred and they reacted…while the public labeled and auto-tuned their reactions. I'd have to update this post at least 3 times a week to crown a new King and Queen.

The awkward black nerd identity is fairly new it has a solid foundation; “pure” ratchetness is not a new phenomenon is very inconsistent and forever changing. The awkward black nerd was constructed by the black online community as opposed to Ratchet being another identity that was constructed and placed upon the black community like the jezebel, the crackhead, the mammy, the welfare queen and the other more deplorable identities. With the nurturing of the online community, with its infinite supply of ratchet content coupled with 24 hours access created the Supa Ratchet identity.

So where does the black community go from here with these two emerging identities? I don't know. \o_0/

I think both are very interesting and more attention needs to be given to these and many other new black identities emerging from the online revolution.

Musical Adonis Flying Lotus' Beautiful Nightmare

Flying Lotus and Warp Music has outdone themselves this this new music video for FlyLo's 4 full-length album "Until The Quiet Comes"  and OMG!! The video can honestly not be reviewed by any mere mortal....so I tried my best in this post on my third Tumblr page called What you SHOULD BE... where I highlight a lot of interesting, noteworthy video, series or websites I've seen online that I believe people should be more aware of. Here is an excerpt of what I had to say:

"Flying Lotus, a seasoned musical Adonis hailing from Los Angeles is putting out his 4th full length album (in the past he's also released multiple EP's, mixes, and collaborations). “Until the Quiet Comes” which has a few scattered special guest appearances (most noticabily being the Queen of Neo-Soul Ms. Eryka Badu). Flylo released a teaser video with samplings of three of the songs on the albulm “See Thru U,” “Hunger,” and “Getting There” (all can be heard in sample size by clicking here).

With all the upfront taken care of, I don’t know if I have the intellectual capability to accurately assess and articulate the magnificence I viewed in this one three minute video…but Imma try!!!"

This video. SERIOUSLY. Just check the video and thank me later!

Illuminati Has Taken Frank Ocean!!!

Hi, it's Nat Divine.

I tend to write about a lot of different topics ranging from social commentary to highlighting different online Youtube/ Social Media awesomeness   to some of the most ridiculous stuff you'd ever find online. I try to switch it up every now again so I created three different tumblrs to contain all my idea and post. One for social commentary, one for spotlighting online awesomeness and one for my random thoughts. With that said...

One of my favorite online conspiracy movements I love to follow is the Illuminati in Hip Hop videos craze. It's so wacky and off the wall you just have to say "awwww, that so cute <3." I just want to pinch all those Illuminati conspiracy theorist on the cheek and give them a lollipop. This is true entertainment. In might latest Random Thoughts post, I try my hand at decoding Illuminati-ness in Frank Ocean's new music video for Pyramids. Here's an excerpt of the Illuminati like digging and puzzle piecing I applied to the video:

"While watching Frank Ocean’s New Video for the single ‘Pyramids’ I would have come to the conclusion that John Mayer is the gatekeeper of the illuminati (the devil) and Nabil (Satan and the director of the video) is recruiting Frank Ocean to become a member of the illuminati. Why you may ask?

Because all the signs are there in the video! Every Illuminati expert worth his soul knows the three common things to look for in a music video when trying to decipher if one is in the Illuminati."

If you'd like to find out what you SHOULD be looking out for when searching for the Illuminati in your favorite artist music video, please continue to read my article here at Divinely ADHD. Follow me and share with your friends :D

Also, to find out what you SHOULD be looking out for online and in your immediate surroundings please follow my other tumblr: What you SHOULD BE...  I give reviews on webseries, indie movies and a whole host of other online amazaballs things you might not even be aware of.

Happy Sunday!!

Five Reasons Why I LOVE Psy

Before you say it, I’ll go ahead and clarify a few things: 1.) Yes I’m black, 2.) Yes I love Kpop, and 3.) YES black folks can dig on some Kpop!

With all the hoopla surrounding “Psy” and the public’s new found hunger for the magical musical stylings of “Kpop” (Korean Pop), a lot of you might be scratching your heads in bewilderment of how this guy got so much buzz so quickly and how he shot into mainstream US “fame”.
Well, I don’t have an answer for that because…I don’t care HOW it happened, I’m just happy it is finally happening. KPop is all the rage in Korean and all over video sharing sites-especially youtube-which is where I first found my way into the glittery forest of Kpop Music My obsession started as a troll that turned into an addiction that has now for the most part subsided. I won’t go into detail about the troll..but it started with this song by Super Junior called ‘Sorry Sorry’ danced by prisoners at a prison in the Philippines , then I was introduced SNSD-Now known as Girls Generation ‘Gee’-, then I was hooked. 2NE1, Bi-Rain by way of Chan-Wook Park’s Awesome MovieBig Bang and the rest is just Kpop history. Like in all honesty, they have kpop training camps recruiting kids of the streets.
Bleh, I’m rambling…lets get to the good stuff shall we :)
Top 5 Reasons I Love Psy!!
1.) He’s been in the kpop game for 12 years.

I’m not sure if this was the actual album cover (I’ve seen several) but he released his first album in 2001.
2.) He’s MUCH older than the Average kpop artist.
This is a typical Kpop Artist montage:
                           {Don’t worry, I think most of them are legal by US standards}

This is a picture of Psy (who is actually 35 years old)

                                 {Look At Som Chon at the Prom}

3.) He created, choreographed, and edited the ENTIRE video practically on his own, LIKE A BOSS!! Check out this Rolling Stone Interview of him getting his “Directors Commentary” on!
4.) He’s reppin Korean and not singing his song in English.  Psy speaks English very well and cocky too, he even went to college in the states (not sure if its really him, just like the ID picture) and yet he hasn’t made the movie to “Englinize” -copy right- his song. I loved watching him get down on the Today Show having the crowd full of…”non-koreans” *wink* sing his song to HIM in Korean. And even though the mainstream media is trying to play him like he’s the next William Hung or something like that and even Ellen not giving him a proper introduction when he came on her show to teach Britney Spears HIS dance moves. He took it all in stride A.) because he’s a BOSS and b.) If the hate then late them hate and watch his money pile up!

5.) YOUTUBE PARODIES!!! As you know, I live for that kind ofawesomenessTwo my favorite YouTube people came out in full effect on this cover: DumbFoundDeadDavid So Comedy!! Yall check them out and keep on enjoying the greatness that is Psy!!! <3
